There are about sixty species of ANTS in North America.
CARPENTER ANTS are among the largest - they can reach up to 3/4 of inch.
They are BLACK or REDDISH-BLACK, with large jaws.
They live in large colonies in the ground, in the moist, softer wood that just begun to decay,
as well as they like the newly built wooden structures.
VELVET ANTS (MUTILLIDAE ANTS) look like large, up to 3/4 of inch, hairy ants.
But they are actually WASPS.
Their females are wingless and resemble ants; their males have wings, but are rarely seen.
Their sting is very painful, but no in danger for people.
Some species are dangerous to the cows on the pasture, and are called a "cow killers"
