Back to Welcome Page Back to NEW GALLERY LITTLE BEETLE - ON CALIFORNIA POPPIES I JUST LOVE BUGGING YOU ALL :)
After each busy day - even more busy night comes up - at least if we're talking about "NIGHT-TIME BUGS LIFE" in Browns Valley.
Below are some photos taken after dark. The largest "bug" I found was CALIFORNIA PRIONUS BEETLE, Prionus Californicus - the "Root Boring Beetle"
- a member of the long-horned Beetle family (Family Cerambycidae).
I believe it was a male - it was almost 2.5" long (without its antennas).
As beautiful as it looks - it is actually a flying pest! (Yes - it can fly) It's huge white larva feeds on the roots of many CA trees, often killing them.
The other beetle I found was smaller (about 1.7") - but still a big one: TEN-LINED JUNE BEETLE, Polyphylla Decemlineata (Falily Scarabaeidae)
- it's also known as "The Watermelon Beetle "One evening I found a GIANT LACEWING Polystoechotidae (Family Neuroptera).
Lacewings are usually not bigger than 0.5" - 3/4" - but this one was humongous!Back to Welcome Page Back to NEW GALLERY LITTLE BEETLE - ON CALIFORNIA POPPIES I JUST LOVE BUGGING YOU ALL :)
