The VALLEY OF FIRE  is located 55 miles northeast of Las Vegas . It is Nevada's oldest and largest state park, dedicated in 1935. It derives its name from red sandstone formations, formed from great shifting sand dunes during the age of dinosaurs, 150 million years ago. Complex uplifting and faulting of the region, followed by extensive erosion, have created  the present landscape of fantastic rock formations and spectacular colors, and the stark beauty of the Mojave Desert.
IT IS ONE OF THE MOST COLORFUL LOCATIONS IN THE SOUTHWEST, ESPECIALLY AT SUNSET - WHEN THE ROCKS GLOW DEEP RED AND DO INDEED SEEM  TO BE ABLAZE WHEN SEEN FROM A DISTANCE.
Prehistoric Indian tribes living in Valley Of Fire included BASKET MAKER people and ANASAZI PUEBLO farmers - with approximate occupation span from 300 B.C. to 1150 A.D. Fine examples of 3000 years old  rock art can be found at several sites within the park, the most interesting are ancient Indians petroglyphs on the ATLATL ROCK

MOJAVE DESSERT covers over 25,000 sq mi of south-eastern California, part of Nevada, Utah & Arizona.
